About the workThis title page belongs to a Latin edition of the “Apocalypse”. In this book of the Bible, also known as the “Book of Revelation”, John the Seer recounts God’s divine plan for the destruction and restoration of the world. The image depicts John writing while contemplating an apparition of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. The Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer produced a sequence of images for the publication, which was released in several editions. They are distinguished by a fineness of line that was hitherto unprecedented in the medium of woodcut.
