About the workAs chronicled in the Bible, John the Seer received a vision of God’s plan for the destruction and restoration of the world. Here we see John before God, holding a book with seven seals in his hand. With the opening of the seals, catastrophes will gradually befall mankind. The Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer created a sequence of images for a new edition of the text, known as the "Book of Revelation" or the "Apocalypse of John". They are distinguished by a fineness of line that was hitherto unprecedented in the medium of woodcut.
