To realise their idea of a portable, easy-to-use digital audio player, Düsseldorf-based entrepreneurs Patric Faßbender and Marcus Stahl founded Tonies in 2013. Audio stories and songs can be played by placing the corresponding character figures, known as Tonies, on the box. In 2015, the company, whose toys have since achieved worldwide success, received its first licence from WDR, the public broadcaster based in Cologne, including rights to stories from „Die Sendung mit der Maus" ("The Show with the Mouse"). Shortly afterwards, "The Lion Who Couldn't Write" by Martin Baltscheit was included in the first starter set. The Toniebox has received numerous international awards for its innovative concept and design.
