Peter Sussiek, circa 1927
Oil on canvas
(H x W)64 × 58 cm
About the workPeter August Böckstiegel painted this picture of his godfather Peter Sussiek with bold brushstrokes and intense colours. The portrait depicts him as a man worn down by hard work. The painter’s oeuvre is characterised by a search for authenticity. Attracted by the achievements of the artists’ association Die Brücke (The Bridge), he came to Dresden in 1913 to complete his academic training. During the summers, he would return to his home village of Arrode in Westphalia to help with the harvest. His family’s rural way of life influenced his choice of motifs.
