Colour woodcut
Sheet dimensions37,3 × 71,2 cm
About the workChinese Admiral Ting Ju-ch'ang gazes coldly through the open balcony doors of his command room. On the horizon, dark smoke rising into the sky heralds the arrival of a warship. It belongs to the Japanese fleet that captured the port of Weihaiwei in February 1895. The conquest of the city marked a turning point in the First Sino-Japanese War, as a result of which the imperial government of China had to admit defeat. Ting Ju-ch'ang took his own life after the lost battle of Weihaiwei.
