on display, room 004.1The Austrian portrait painter Johann Georg Edlinger depicts Lambert Krahe, director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy and head of the Electoral Picture Gallery, holding a pencil. This is a reference to Krahe’s artistic work, which earned him the title of first painter in the court of Elector Karl Theodor in 1758. Such a position offered prestige, financial security, and the opportunity to develop an international network. The Elector also appointed Edlinger as a court painter in 1781: Before Krahe had introduced him to the court after meeting him in Munich.
