on display, room 039Why do we sometimes just want to hide? The South Korean painter Sojeong Lee lives and works in Düsseldorf. In her works, she explores dreams, the unconscious, and inner states, which she translates into a visual language inspired by cartoons. The figures appear as embodiments of mental worlds. Here, a maple leaf covers the face: flushed cheeks peek out; the vaguely rendered eyes evoke memories of the peek-a-boo game, in which a person covers their own eyes with their hands to make themselves seemingly invisible. The leaf becomes a protective shield – oscillating between fun, the need for retreat and vulnerability.
