on display, room 039On a rain-soaked country path, a ghost irons its costume. Above, thoughtful and humorous phrases appear in the sky, like casual asides. The German artist Friedrich Kunath, who lives in Los Angeles, often weaves sentences into his paintings. The humour of the texts intertwines with the melancholy of a landscape inspired by nineteenth-century painting. Kunath combines elements of popular culture with references to art history, so that cartoons and everyday objects meet romantic pictorial scenes, dissolving the boundaries between high and mass culture.
