on display, room 027The Austrian-born painter, who worked under the pseudonym Soshana, lived and worked in many countries, including France, Mexico, Morocco and India. In 1956, she travelled to China, where she studied ink painting techniques in Hangzhou. In this work, the pared-down, calligraphic line is combined with a spontaneous, sweeping brushstroke – a work that bridges the gap between Chinese ink painting tradition and the gestural painting of Abstract Expressionism. Her stay and artistic dialogue in China culminated a year later in an exhibition at the Imperial Palace in Beijing.
