About the workBarnacles are crustaceans that do not have a heart. They live under water on surfaces such as driftwood or ship hulls. Chris Reinecke described how she understood the problematic mussel growth as akin to chewing gum that sticks under the shoe: strongly adhesive and therefore particularly stubborn. The artist used conventional chewing gum as a material and invited visitors to her exhibitions to continue her work with gum they had chewed themselves. She thereby removed the boundary between artist and viewer; Art was to be a democratic process.
