on display, room 027In 1953, the German architect and designer Paul Schneider-Esleben developed the 855 spherical tubular armchair as furniture for the Mannesmann tower, which he built on the banks of the Rhine in Düsseldorf between 1956-58. The special feature of this "cantilever model" was its steel ball joint with inserted chrome steel tubes, the construction of which enabled comfortable and at the same time pleasantly rocking seating comfort. The design is reminded a little of the first Russian earth satellite "Sputnik" from 1957, hence the nickname. In 1960, the armchair was awarded the silver medal at the "Triennale di Milano" art and design exhibition.
