About the work
In the 1830s, Amalie Bensinger studied painting with private teachers in Düsseldorf. After completing her training, she travelled to Italy in the 1850s, which at that time attracted many German artists. In addition to studying Italian art, she was fascinated by the landscape and the local people. This is also evident in Bensinger's study of a young Italian man's head, in which she paid particular attention to the distribution of light and shadow: certain parts of the face recede into darkness, while others are brought into the light.
