About the workA wooden block, a knife, some paint and paper – this is all that is needed to make a woodcut. In 1905, with the founding of the artists’ association Die Brücke (The Bridge) and its desire to return to traditional crafts, this long-established printing technique enjoyed a renaissance that caused a stir in the art world. Grain patterns, cracks, flaws – everything that previous generations had erased or polished away – were now deliberate features of the design. The group had issued their own founding manifesto as a woodcut. Even after the artists went their separate ways in 1913, the woodcut remained a popular means of expression for several years, for former members and other contemporary artists alike.
