About the workPatterns everywhere: like many other artists of the time, Konrad Lueg was inspired by everyday objects such as food packaging, home textiles and wrapping paper. From the mid-1960s, he painted large-format pictures with two-dimensional, decorative depictions reminiscent of wallpaper. Through imitation, the paintings address serial, industrial production techniques and thus the loss of artistic handwriting. In this work, the strict pattern contrasts with the painter’s distinctive brushstrokes. At the same time, Lueg poses the question of the extent to which motifs from everyday and popular culture are worthy of art. He invites us to sharpen our eye for simple things.
