About the workFrom the stadium to the living room: Konrad Lueg addressed sport’s importance for the community early on in his career. In the first season of the newly founded Bundesliga, the German premier league, in 1963, he produced a series of paintings showing scenes from the football field. He thus picked up on the great interest in the new league, which demonstrated a change towards a future-oriented and self-confident Federal Republic. The Düsseldorf artist often made the players’ facial features unrecognisable, depicting them schematically and flatly. Lueg thus demystified a contemporary type of hero who stood for a new “we” feeling in post-war society.
