About the workAccording to Christian legend, in the 3rd century AD Agatha of Catania did not want to give up her faith or her virginity and refused to marry a Roman governor. The punishment that followed included her breasts being cut off. As the wounds healed, Agatha is considered the patron saint of breast cancer patients. A dessert called “nun's breasts” in the shape of small breasts is also dedicated to her. It is not known who painted this picture, but the motif and composition suggest that it was created in Rome, but also influenced by French art.
