About the workOtto Pankok’s main works include “Passion”, a series of charcoal drawings from 1933/34 in which he spoke up for persecuted minorities and criticised the tyranny of National Socialism. In 1935, a domestic servant denounced him to the authorities for having a “communist attitude”; he was banned from working the following year. Pankok refused to abandon his anti-government views and sent New Year’s greetings to friends at the end of 1938, offering an ironic and biting commentary on the political situation. In this woodcut a proboscis monkey warns the viewer of the impending start of war.
