Untitled (Stalactites-Red-Table), 1997
Wood supports, table, cardboard, tape, aluminium foil, paint
(H x W x D)225 × 80 × 146 cm
About the workThis fragile construction, made from materials such as aluminium foil, adhesive tape and cardboard, is characteristic of Thomas Hirschhorn’s anti-aesthetic agenda. The seemingly blood-soaked, dripstone-like tips are reminiscent of the needles of an instrument of torture that has pierced the victim. The juxtaposition with the photographic detail of an unknown mass grave on the wall creates a reference to real world events. This early work is an example of Hirschhorn’s direct and challenging art – in a radical way, he confronts the viewers with the atrocities of mankind.
