About the work“My last picture is completed: the radiant evening sun over the white houses in the shade of a slope where agaves are blooming”, wrote Richard Seewald in 1921 at the end of a journey to Elba. The painting was to be symbolic for his stay on the Italian island. The artist, who worked in Munich until 1924 and later in Cologne and Ticino, taught himself to paint. Seewald processed his travels in numerous paintings as well as in books he wrote and partly illustrated. On the reverse side of this canvas is a study of another southern landscape.
