About the workIn this work, Amalie Bensinger depicts her niece Adelheid, who later became Countess von Baillehache. The artist's brother, Friedrich August, probably commissioned this portrayal of his daughter. He also had himself and his wife Katherina painted. Portraits made up only a small part of Bensinger's oeuvre. She saw herself as a history painter – a rarity for women at the time – and devoted herself in particular to Christian themes. In the 1830s, she took private lessons from the painter Karl Ferdinand Sohn in Düsseldorf as women were not admitted to the art academy.
