About the workThis motif is based on sketches that Lyonel Feininger made in the Baltic Sea resort of Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom. He transformed the landscape into an abstract, dynamic composition. As head of the print workshop at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Feininger chose this woodcut in 1920 as the opening work for the “First Folder” of the “Bauhaus Prints”. In 1919, the art critic Theodor Däubler wrote about Feininger’s unique “crystalline” style in his text “In the Struggle for Modern Art”: “The earth is blown up! Blocks fly into the air, spring apart: large, geometric, not even seemingly random.”
