About the workSince the 17th century, Asian works of art have been in great demand among European art collectors. This includes small-format paintings from India, like those seen here, which were created in the 18th century especially for European officers and members of the trading companies. The Kunstpalast's holdings include a 21-sheet bundle of Indian and Persian miniatures from the collection of the Düsseldorf artist Laurenz Heinrich Hetjens. Hetjens amassed his collection in the second half of the 19th century, which demonstrates a continuing interest in these pictures.
