About the work
According to the Bible, the seductive powers of a serpent led to the expulsion of the first human couple from Para- dise: persuaded by the reptile, Eve tasted the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and passed it on to Adam. Angela Hampel – trained in the GDR and still active in Dresden today – took up this theme, known as the "Fall of Man". In the entwined bodies of woman and animal, shame and desire are expressed. With her firm grip on the serpent’s head, Hampel highlights the autonomous action of the female figure: she controls the creature, the symbol of temptation and sin.
