About the workAs a result of the lost First World War, traditional gender roles began to shift: many of the returning soldiers saw themselves as the losers, while women, having gained new responsibilities at home, became more self-assured. At the same time, the contradiction between traditional gender images and the increasing presence of sexuality in public life led to tensions. In his etching, Otto Dix depicts a woman as the victim of a brutal sexual murder. In doing so, he not only addresses sexual violence against women but also the societal crisis of his time.
