Dunes on Sylt, ca. 1920
Lithograph, coloured
Sheet dimensions38,2 × 50 cm
About the workOtto Mueller belonged to the Brücke group of artists until 1913. After an interruption of six years – partly due to the First World War – he was able to draw nudes by the sea and in the dunes again. Here he focussed on the depiction of a paradisiacal landscape. Behind depictions of tropical-looking plants, he formed the sandy terrain in black contours. The piece was probably created in July 1920 during a visit to Westerland on Sylt lasting several days. Mueller spent the summers of 1919 and 1920 on the North Sea islands. His sister Elfriede lived on Föhr at the time.
