About the work"She not only saw the forest wilderness as it was, with the sharp eyes of a realist, but she also saw what was not there in reality, but only in her imagination." The Munich writer Richard Braungart wrote these lines in an obituary for Emmy Lischke in 1921. This forest landscape also radiates something fairytale-like. The figure on the shepherd's back directs the viewer's gaze into the depths towards the sky. The coarse application of colour is typical of Lischke's landscape paintings. Before working in Munich from 1887, the artist had taken private painting lessons in Düsseldorf.
