on display, room 018.4 About the workCesar Klein, who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1897 to 1900 and then transferred to the teaching institute at the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin, was famous for his interior designs as well as his stage and film sets. His woodcuts are characterised by delicate traces of watercolours along the printed lines. This translucent paint applied after printing makes each image a unique piece. With diagonally arranged objects and lines at acute angles, the artist creates the impression of spatiality and movement.
