About the workPrivate retreat or public stage? After studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and serving as a soldier in World War I, Max Burchartz initially devoted himself to village motifs before turning his attention to life in the big city. Through the large window, the police constable is seen staring openly into the cramped room from the street. We, too, as viewers, have an unobstructed view of the three scantily clad young women. Social reality is laid bare, with no safe space in sight.
