About the workIn the deepest countryside near the Baltic Sea, Lyonel Feininger found the subjects for his images: Gothic churches, medieval fortifications, desolate landscapes. The Bauhaus artist revisited the motif of the Rostock Gate in Ribnitz, the basis for this woodcut, on a number of different trips. He captured it in drawings, used it for a caricature as well as additional woodcuts and for an etching in 1912. In this woodcut from 1920, lines and surfaces meet in highly contrasting ways and emphasise the impressive architecture.
