About the workAn absent-minded game or an erotic invitation? This portrait series captures a simple action: the circling of a tongue around a mouth. The viewer’s gaze turns this process into a communicative act. The Polish conceptual artist Natalia LL confronts us with the experience of assuming an unsolicited sexualising view of the subject. Three years after the work was created, the concept of the “male gaze” first appeared in feminist theory, giving a name to the hegemony of male perspectives on women in art and literature.
