About the workWhen Conrad Felixmüller refused to serve in the military after a medical examination for deployment in the First World War in 1917, he was conscripted to work as an orderly in the Arnsheim psychiatric hospital near Dresden. In the same year, his then girlfriend, the artist Lotte Wahle, gave birth to a child, but she was not interested in any contact between father and son. Professional and private events caused Felixmüller to become a patient at the clinic himself. He has portrayed himself here as a prisoner in a room who keeps in touch with the outside world by letter.
