not on displayAround 1900, an unknown young woman’s body was recovered from the Seine in Paris. Fascinated by her beauty, an employee of the morgue made a plaster cast of her face. Based on this, numerous death masks were created. The mysterious origin, the unresolved cause of death, and the woman’s beauty made the masks popular objects. They were especially found as morbid decorations in many artists’ homes. To this day, her peaceful expression and undamaged face leave room for speculation about her death.
