From 1933, the National Socialist government vehemently pushed the development of the “Volkswagen”, the people’s car. The first Beetle went into production 1938. Aspects of the design were adapted to technical innovations, but ist classic shape remained the same until manufacturing ceased in 2003. This model was one of the first to replace the split rear window – also known as a “Pretzel” – with a single, oval pane of glass, which is why it is now nicknamed “Ovali”.
