About the workLooking at the hands in Louisa Clement's photographs, one shudders: they assume anatomically impossible positions and the dark shadows look suspiciously similar to bruises. The hands belong to a life-size doll that the German artist had made in her own likeness – a kind of avatar of herself that speaks to the demand for the constant availability of the female body in a male-dominated society. Clement asked museum visitors to interact with the doll, resulting in the grotesque bending of the fingers. They bear witness to the powerlessness of the artificial being.
