About the workA hairy long-nosed monkey gently cradles a faceless being in its arms. The sculptor and draughtswoman Paloma Varga Weisz, who studied in Düsseldorf and still lives there, often draws on motifs from art history. This pair of figures, for example, is reminiscent of the Christian depiction of the Pietà, in which Mary mourns over Jesus as he lies dead in her arms. Varga Weisz combines the familiar with the strange and fabulous, thus challenging the viewer’s usual way of seeing.
