About the workHouse caps such as this one with an upturned brim were worn by aristocratic men in the eighteenth century once they had taken off their wigs within their own four walls. They were often accompanied by a matching housecoat, whose straight, wide cut was very similar to that of Asian robes. These special garments were typically made out of silk with motifs featuring colourful plants and tropical fruit, as well as exotic animals. These textiles were mainly imported from China and India.
