on display, room 012 About the workThe origins of the traditional costume for men on the island of Madeira lie on the Portuguese mainland; the outfit arrived on the island in the sixteenth or seventeenth century, with additional elements inspired by Moorish and African styles. The ensemble consists of short white trousers with pleats, a shirt with or without embroidery, and either a plain cap like this or a colourful woollen one with a long, raised peak. Conical headgear is found in many cultures because it is so simple to make.
