About the workThe former Jesuit priest Pierre de La Mésangère settled in Paris in 1793; four years later he became publisher of the "Journal des dames et des modes", the only French fashion magazine at the time. In 1802, he introduced a section for furnishings. His sheets with furnishing suggestions appeared as hand-colored copperplate engravings, which allowed subscribers far beyond Paris to participate in the latest trends.
