About the workDuring his lifetime, Utagawa Sadahide was one of the most prominent woodblock masters in Edo, present-day Tokyo. In 1866, he represented Japan at the Paris Exposition. This work depicts scenes from the historical play “Kanjincho”, which entered the Kabuki theatre repertoire in 1840 and was chosen as a motif by the artist in the same year. The drama, which quickly became an entertainment classic that is still popular today, requires the main protagonists to be talented dancers as well as actors.
