About the workRenowned for his landscape paintings, Andreas Achenbach reveals a different side here: he provides a satirical glimpse into the Düsseldorf art scene. The frieze, which consists of four colour lithographs, invites the viewer to recognise the figures caricatured within. The “Zug der Düsseldorfer Künstler” (Procession of Düsseldorf Artists) offers a foretaste of Achenbach’s political caricatures, which he would go on to create in the revolutionary year of 1848. In these works he denounced the authoritarianism of the Prussian state and its “poor cultural policy”.
