Paintings

Major works from the collection of Elector Johann Wilhelm II, such as the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary” by Peter Paul Rubens, as well as permanent loans from the Düsseldorf Art Academy by Lucas Cranach the Elder and Giovanni Bellini offer insights into the development of European painting. In addition, the history of modern painting can be traced through works from the Expressionist and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movements as well as those from the international Düsseldorf art scene of the post-war period.
